Hatchlings begin their dig and climb out of the nest in a coordinated effort. Once near the surface, they will often remain there until the temperature of the sand cools, usually indicating night-time, when they are less likely to be eaten by predators or overheat. Once the hatchlings emerge from the nest, they use cues to find the water including the slope of the beach, the white crests of the waves, and the natural light of the ocean horizon, particularly the reflection of the moon.

If the hatchlings successfully make it down the beach and reach the surf, they begin what is called a “swimming frenzy” which may last for several days and varies in intensity and duration among species. The swimming frenzy gets the hatchlings away from dangerous nearshore waters where predation is high. Once hatchlings enter the water, their "lost years" begin and their whereabouts will be unknown for as long as a decade. When they have reached approximately the size of a dinner plate, the juvenile turtles will return to coastal areas where they will forage and continue to mature.

What can you do to protect sea turtles?

The loggerhead sea turtle is considered a vulnerable species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. Untended fishing gear is responsible for thousands of loggerhead deaths annually. Other threats include the loss of nesting habitat due to coastal development, predation of nests, and human disturbances that interrupt nesting habits or cause disorientations during the emergence of hatchlings (such as artificial lights). All have taken a significant toll on loggerhead populations.

Nearly 24,000 metric tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year. Turtles ingest a wide array of this floating debris, including bags, sheets, pellets, balloons and abandoned fishing line. Loggerheads may mistake the floating plastic for jellyfish, a common food item. The ingested plastic causes numerous health concerns, including intestinal blockage, reduced nutrient absorption and malnutrition, suffocation, ulcerations, or starvation.

Pregnant female sea turtles return to the beaches

Pregnant female sea turtles return to the beaches (or near) where they hatched years before. Using her back flippers, she digs a nest in the sand. Digging the nest and laying her eggs usually takes from one to three hours, after which the mother turtle slowly drags herself back to the ocean.
The sea turtle lays up to 100-120 eggs, which incubate in the warm sand for 45-65 days. The temperature of the sand determines the genders of baby sea turtles, with cooler sand producing more males and warmer sand producing more females. The phenomenon is called Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination, or TSD, and governs the genders of other reptiles, too, including alligators and crocodiles.
